As the World 12th country to issue its own offical bullion gold coin, Malaysia with its "Kijang Emas" joins the ranks of other well known bullion gold coins such as the South African Krugerrand, Canadian Gold Maple, Australian Gold Nugget, etc.
The Malaysian Kijang Emas is minted by the Royal Mint of Malaysia and was officially launched by our former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in 17 July 2001. The observe design features a Barking Deer and the reverse side features the Hibiscus. The Kijang Emas has a gold purity of .9999 millesimal fineness meaning its a 24 carats gold coin.
The coins come in denominations of RM200, RM100 and RM50 which are nominal face values, and weighs 1 oz, ½ oz and ¼ oz respectively. RM is the notation for the Malaysian Ringgit.
The buy and sell price of Kijang Emas is determined by the prevailing international gold market price. For example when the International gold price (1oz) on 03/08/09 is USD 959.00, the Kijang Emas price 1(oz) = RM3548 (buy price-price Maybank sells to it customers) and RM 3434 (selling price - price you sell to Maybank ).
USD 959 x 3.5339 (exchange rate) = RM 3389 .
As you can see from the above example, the Kijang Emas price is very close to the International Gold Price. Our price is a bit higher due to the value added cost such as the minting cost, transportation, insurance, profit margin, etc.
OK, now look at the price of Kijang Emas coin (1 oz = 31.1035grm) since its launching date 18/07/2001 till 03/08/09 ( 8 years).
